Amongst the 69 NEW TAXES Gordon Brown (NEW LABOUR ) INVENTED was Air Passenger Duty (APD) APD was dreamt up, supposedly, to save the world from global warming, anyone feel more virtuous when you pay £100’s extra to board a flight and save the world?
@LuxuryTravelled So until you can develop a plan or reform domestic APD you would rather it Flybe fails, that's not a helpful suggestion for both consumers or employees. Your opinions are long term and require vastly greater amounts of investment over a differed APD bill.Ian @oncearoundMIRSI • 17 Jan 07:07 GMT
#bbqt first Q on reducing APD. Still not sure why this was a good idea post Paris Climate agreement but not now?...flying has a lower carbon footprint than many alternative means via car and ferry.🏴CHRISTOPHER McEleny @SNPChris • 16 Jan 22:41 GMT
@berniespofforth @iain_claxton Due to a high proportion of internal flights their APD is high, add to that the historical issues of wrong choice of aircraft, but surely the new owners would have taken that into account, they only paid £2.8m.David Claxton @DC_claxton • 16 Jan 17:44 GMT

Flybe not passing on tax it collects is fraud. Why no action by HMRC? If this was a small business HMRC would bankrupt them to recover the unpaid tax. #tax #HMRC #APD #flybe #aviation #ClimateEmergencyKeith Parkins @keithpp • 15 Jan 20:26 GMT

@ryanjarv @SkyNewsBreak Not sure I agree with you on the point that if APD was removed then the £26 (rtn flight) would be kept, as it is displayed as a tax and not as the airfare, therefore it would just be removed from the overall price of the ticket.Donald Munro 🚵♀️🏴🇪🇺 @donaldjmunro • 15 Jan 15:44 GMT
It would be interesting to know how Flybe ran up a£100m debt in unpaid APD. If customers have paid it, it should have been passed on within days.Andy Goff @AndyGoff16 • 15 Jan 14:06 GMT
@KimDriver11 I suspect them of using Flybe's fragile cashflow position as leverage to get the Government to reduce or eliminate APD. I also think the Govt is aware of this so has wisely only offered a "review".(((🕷Frances Coppola))) @Frances_Coppola • 15 Jan 14:02 GMT
I'd like to see all fossil fuel exploration banned, new investment taxed at increasingly punitive levels with funds used to incentivise renewables, certainly not for deferring APD for failing airlines. There's simply no excuse for opening a new coal mine. #ClimateEmergency https://t.co/0XXJiO5BMLPhil Archer @philarcher1 • 15 Jan 13:42 GMT
Cut APD? After "promises" to Northern Ireland? Javid's coffers have sprung a lot of leaks.
@British_Airways #WillieWalsh complaining today about the government rescuing Flybe with a hold on APD payments is very ironic as a lot of their financial woes started when BA sold BA Connect to them in 2007! I think Mr Walsh should hold fire on throwing stones at small airlinesAndrew @Bigglesdaf • 15 Jan 11:38 GMT
Dismaying that UK Govt is apparently prepared to tinker with APD and subsidise domestic flights while the fate of #HS2 hangs in the balance. That’s it’s happening while climate-change-aided bushfires rage in Australia is doubly shameful. https://t.co/8R2uFE3yayMadeleine Hallward @MHallward • 15 Jan 11:23 GMT
@MartinSLewis Certain 'rural' routes like inter island routes and routes to and from the Scottish Islands should be APD free for 'locals'. They are vital. The rest should be increased. No one needs to fly to Manchester or Edinburgh. But I agree rail fares need to be looked at too.Neil C. @jaffawine • 15 Jan 11:05 GMT
For as long as you are an MEP, it would be useful if you made an effort to read the rules.
There’s actually no suggestion whatsoever that the government has given aid to Flybe. A payment schedule for paying the APD, perhaps, but not aid. https://t.co/z3uEFREphy
@MartinSLewis Is APD duty the same at all airports ? If yes then why more expensive for flights from some airports to same destinations with the same carrier ? Especially from Scottish airports.Frank @univercitytaxis • 15 Jan 09:36 GMT
Wonder how @FlyBe would react if I offered to pay the APD element of my ticket cost 3 years after I fly ? A dangerous precedent for the govt to change the law because a company can’t manage its cash flow.Neil @NRManc • 15 Jan 08:37 GMT
While some routes are obviously important (but how essential?) we haven't seen the government step in to save other businesses on this scale...
Oh and as as acting aviation, cutting APD... hardly indicative of taking climate change goals seriously.
A can of worms. The APD debacle today is just the beginning. This is incompetent government. https://t.co/THoXpgDqd4Terry Barker @terry_barker21 • 15 Jan 07:43 GMT
@bbc5live #wakeuptomoney - the discussion around #flybe and flying to the south west is bonkers !! Use the APD to ‘turn the Flybe fleet electric’ Lets live in Cornwall but work in London. Put the prices up, if it’s not viable as a budget airline ?thermalimageguy @thermalimageguy • 15 Jan 05:50 GMT
@alexhern APD in UK just made people fly to Dublin then take the same long haul flight without it as the delta was worth it for Business Class Long Haul
Short Haul it works, Long Haul if too high it’s counterproductive. The Dublin loophole was closed by pound imploding so not feasible now
So much wrong with the story. APD hasn't "added to the airline's losses" - the airline is just a tax collector. If anything, it probably makes a profit on the un-transferred receipts (the £100m...?) https://t.co/YFDNGjS3HgJohn Cotton @JohnCotton • 14 Jan 23:07 GMT

@alexforeurope I am not sure that's the answer.
I am more interested in why train travel often costs more than air travel, even with APD.
